On October 20, Chris Voss, an award winning FBI negotiator, led a SmartPractices webinar discussing the needed skills for proper and effective negotiating. During the presentation, he provided practical tips for using tried and true techniques to advance your negotiations and gain a distinct advantage during these interactions.

According to Chris Voss, “Emotional intelligence is a very important factor to be used during negotiations. It gives people an advantage without sacrificing their deal-making power.” Another point stressed by Chris Voss is understanding “no,” is not the end of the conversation, but is actually the beginning.

In addition, other skills such as relationship building, good listening, decisiveness, problem solving, preparedness and patience and even good body language are all qualities that help assure a satisfactory ending to negotiations.
